SWAN HILL

Friday the 13th, could be lucky for anyone attending Friday Frolic at the Swan Hill Bowls Club – forget the superstitions!

Everyone who participates on Friday afternoons has a chance of being lucky, whether it be winning bowls, cracking the jackpot or winning one of Mick’s many raffle prizes, with all most welcome to join in.

Those wishing to play bowls need to enter before 2.30pm for a 3pm start.

All bowls winners get a prize, with clubhouse activities also open to non-bowlers.

The jackpot went off again last Friday, with the lucky team being, J.Thompson, H.Smith and S.Thompsett.

Last Saturday, our weekend pennant season began in near perfect weather conditions.

Swan Hill Division 1 started the season off well, with an overall win against Lake Boga, even though two rinks had minimal losses. G.Scandalora’s rink had a good win and covered the losses. Saturday, Swan Hill plays Racecourse, who are coming off a win against Murray Downs.

Division 2 were defeated by Murray Downs 3, with A.Marshman and M.Balchin’s rinks winning, but were unable to cover A.Smith’s team, who were outscored by D.Scown’s rink.

This Saturday, Swan Hill 2 plays Murray Downs 2, which will be a challenge, with both Division 1 and 2 playing at home.

Our Division 4 team received a forfeit from Nyah District, with the players taking advantage of the time to practice, one rink against the other.

This week, Division 4 have the bye and those that can are encouraged to practice for the following Saturday.

Midweek pennant began on Tuesday, also in great weather conditions, with Swan Hill 1 going down to Racecourse 2 on both rinks.

Next Tuesday will see Swan Hill 1 take on Racecourse 1 at home.

Division 2 travelled to Tooleybuc and made the trip worthwhile, coming home victorious by 20 shots. M.Lay, F.Burge, G.Coulter and D.McBeath were the stars of the day, with team 2 playing Manangatang at home on Tuesday.

Finally, congratulations to Swan Hill Bowls member Kessada Smith on receiving her Australian citizenship at a Swan Hill Rural City Council ceremony on Tuesday.

LAKE BOGA

Last Saturday marked the start of the pennant bowls season, with mixed results in all divisions.

Division 1 played at Swan Hill and saw both Ken Hamill’s and Peter Phelps rinks win, with close games all day, but unfortunately Danny Kelly’s rink lost by a margin that saw us with not enough points to win the day.

Division 3 played Racecourse and again had a two-rink win and having enough points to win the match. Both Peter Snell and David Condy’s rinks won and Terry Haw’s team narrowly lost.

Division 4 also had an overall win, with Robin Jolly’s rink claiming the win, earning enough points to carry Alex Jobling’s team, who again lost by a small margin.

Midweek pennant Division 1 was unsuccessful against the strong Murray Downs team, but in Division 2 against Nyah District we had a win, after Jill Pye’s rink won with enough points to cover for the three-shot loss of Shirley Swan’s rink.

Social bowls saw 26 play players compete in perfect conditions, with Helen Jobling, Richard Bruton, Barry Free and Bones Smith the winners with plus 7, while Marie O’Meara, Ron Atkinson, Ian Ross and Leigh Kingsbury finished as runners up with plus 3.

Reminder to club members that our next meeting is on Tuesday, October 16 at 7.30 pm.
