Bowls Notes

MURRAY DOWNS

Firstly, massive congratulations to the team of Josh Thornton, ‘Buck’ Lehmann, John Caldwell and Garry McCaig, who are our national men’s fours bronze medallists.

It is a truly wonderful achievement and one they should all be very proud of.

Social bowls last week was won by Peter Furnell, Noel Delmenico and Cath Parry, with only 17 players taking part as some of our members took the opportunity to watch our four star bowlers in Perth.

Members on duty next Thursday are Robert Smith and David Timmins.

Pennant last Saturday had some interesting games, with our team two being our only winner for the weekend, while our midweek pennant teams came away with three victories out of four.

The social club has organised a pizza night tomorrow after bowls, with it also being a dress-up event to match the first initial of your first name.

Please put your name on the notice board today if you are attending for catering purposes.

There will be a Melbourne Cup tournament on Tuesday, November 7, beginning at 10.30am, consisting of any combination three bowl triples, with three games of seven ends.

Sweeps will be run on the day for the cup, with great raffle prizes to be won.

It is a casual dress event, with teams or single entries to Dawne Holland on 0402 020 996 or Carl Fox on 0429 855 260, with entries closing at 4pm, Monday, November 6.

Lists are on the notice board for entry into club matches. Please enter your name if you intend to play.

SWAN HILL

Swan Hill’s Division 1 and 2 teams were unable to bring home the win after travelling to Moulamein and Balranald respectively last weekend.

Division 1 did manage to win one rink, being that of G.McGrath, O.Lewis, W.King and F.Jacka defeating M.Stephens’ rink by three shots.

Their three shots was a long way off covering the other two losing rinks, however, with the Division 1 team no doubt trying their hardest for a better result when they play Murray Downs 1 tomorrow.

Balranald 1 were too good for Swan Hill 2, with Balranald winning all three rinks, seeing our Division 2 team go down by 47 shots overall.

Tomorrow our Division 2 side will head off to Manangatang and try to make amends for last week.

Swan Hill 4 received yet another forfeit last Saturday from Murray Downs 5, however the team braved the windy conditions and played 10 ends of practice instead.

Some of these players are yet to play a game and are looking forward to visiting Racecourse 5 tomorrow.

Midweek pennant on Tuesday saw Swan Hill’s Division 2 side have their third win, defeating Murray Downs 3 by two shots overall.

K.Smith, A.Smith, E.Grey and R.Dorigo had a resounding win, which covered the loss on the other rink.

Next Tuesday they will host Racecourse 3 and try to keep up their winning streak.

Swan Hill’s Division 1 midweek pennant result saw L.King’s rink win by two shots against Murray Downs 2, but they were unable to cover the other rink’s loss.

On Tuesday, Division 1 will go to Lake Boga and attempt to do better.

Today is Friday Frolic at 3pm, with names to be in by 2.30pm to be sure of a game.

The jackpot is starting to build with no winners last Friday.

All are most welcome to join in, with no experience necessary, and there will be plenty going on in the clubhouse after the game for those not wanting to play bowls, but would like some social interaction.

Melbourne Cup Day is only 11 days away and there’s a notice sheet on the board for names. A chicken and salad buffet lunch with a free glass of bubbly or orange juice and sweets, all for $25.

Afternoon tea will be served after the running of the Melbourne Cup, with Cup sweeps to enter from 11.30am, and lunch at 12pm.

Short game of bowls, $5 entry, to finish in time to watch the big race, with members to please bring a plate of afternoon tea, either savoury or sweet.

In Division 4, Alex Jobling, Ray Leach, Jeannie Leach and Laurel Dewhurst won their rink.

On Tuesday, the midweek pennant Division 1 winners were Robyn Jolley, Ian Ross, John McCormack and Helen Jobling, while in Division 2, it was Shirley Swan, Ron Atkinson, Noel Hender and Laurel Dewhurst.

The winners of Wednesday social bowls were Ken Hamill, ‘Bones’ Smith and Nola Bruton, while the runners up were Ian Ross, Janet Hamill, Rod Dewhurst and Sally Meehan, with Ron Atkinson on duty next week.
