MURRAY DOWNS

LAST Thursday at social bowls, 27 players took part, the winners being Peter Furnell, Keith Burrage and Jesse Cox, while the runners-up were John Alderuccio and David Timmins.

There was no lucky number, so it jackpots to the following week. Duty members next week are Dawne Holland and Cath Parry.

The Melbourne Cup tournament on Tuesday was a great fun day with lots of lucky raffle winners.

Congratulations to the winning team of Danny Kelly and Neville Martin as well as runners-up David Alderuccio and Greg Robertson.

Thank you also to the many helpers who organised the sweeps, match committee who ran the tournament, members who brought afternoon tea and helped out in the bar, much appreciated.

The social club have organised a fish-and-chips evening at Riverside Park tomorrow night, please see a member of the social club for any further information.

A reminder of the dinner at the Swan Hill Club on Wednesday, November 29 at 6pm to honour our four champion bowlers, Josh, Buck, John and Garry.

RACECOURSE

NIGHT bowls was well attended this week, winners being Barry’s Badgers, Jono Wright, Jade Morvell, Brendan Peno and Ken Barry, who won their match and finished on 9/4.

Good luck to Lyndal Taylor, who plays in the final of the State Singles on Sunday, and also to Norm Smith, who will be playing in the semi-final against Buck Lehmann.

Kylie Gardner and Fay Devereux face off in the Racecourse Ladies’ Club Championship final, also on Sunday at 10am, with a great match expected.

Congratulations to Kylie Gardner and her team of Lyndal Taylor, Alannah Taylor and Helen Frame, who won the best ladies’ rink at the regional round robin last Sunday – well done ladies.

Our next tournament will be the Country Care Hearing Any Combination Triples, which will be played on Sunday, November 26, starting at 12.30pm.

SWAN HILL

OUR Swan Hill Division 1 weekend pennant side redeemed themselves last Saturday by winning all three rinks against Nyah District.

G.Evans, B.Husson, B.Richardson and R.Dorigo were the top order of the day, finishing 17 shots up, while G.Scandalora’s rink added another 11 shots to the total and B.Quaife’s rink gained a further five shots, giving us a total of 33 shots up.

Swan Hill have now climbed up to fourth spot on the ladder and will be trying their hardest to keep up their winning streak against Lake Boga tomorrow, who are in fifth position.

Division 2 struggled against the strong Racecourse 2 team, Alan Marshman’s rink drawing with T.Wiseman’s rink, while the other two rinks fell short.

Our Division 2 will cross the bridge on Saturday, to face off against Murray Downs 3.

Our Division 4 are pleased to be playing pennant at long last, having enjoyed Lake Boga’s hospitality, with Boga supplying some subs.

L.Tompsett’s rink had a win, but the other rink went down, with team four awaiting a visit from Manangatang tomorrow.

Midweek Pennant was played on Wednesday after Cup day, with neither the Division 1 or 2 teams able to pull off a win.

Division 1 lost both rinks to the top of the ladder Murray Downs 1 side, while K.Smith’s rink won by nine shots in Division 2, but were unable to cover the other rink’s loss against Murray Downs 4.

Melbourne Cup day at the Swan Hill Bowls Club was a very successful day, 42 attendees enjoying an exotic lunch enjoyed by regular attenders from the caravan group, past and present members, among other visitors.

The Cup sweeps run by K. and J.Sibley were very popular, with some patrons sporting happy smiles after the big race.

Only eight players ventured out to play 10 ends of bowls, playing four’s, with the winners being visitors R.Campbell and D.Canham, along with L. and S.Tompsett, while the runners-up were J.Thompson, A.Marshman, B.Huillier and R.Poole.

The lady of the day prize was awarded to a visitor from the caravan group, with a big thank you to all who helped make the day a great success.

Friday Frolic will be on again today for those who are prepared to play in the forecast heat, please enter early for a 3pm start, with happy hour and raffles on regardless of the weather.

The jackpot winners from last week were G.Clark, E.Hunter and D.McBeath.

All the best to Brian Quaife on Sunday as he plays off in the State Singles finals at the Swan Hill Bowls Club, commencing at 9.30am.

Congratulations to Kessada Smith on being part of the winning Murray Mallee Regional Round Robin Team last Sunday, which was held at Murray Downs.


LAKE BOGA

RACECOURSE proved too strong for us in Division 1 at home last Saturday, with a 31-shot win.

Ken Hamill’s rink went down by five shots, Peter Philp’s rink went down by three and Danny Kelly’s rink went down by 23.

Our Division 3 team played at home against Racecourse 3 and had a draw, while our Division 4, Team 3 played at home against Swan Hill, having a good win by 10 shots.

Rink 1, consisting of Jenny Robertson Grey, John Pye, Robyn Jolley were up by 11 shots, while the rink of Alec Jobling, Ray Leach, Jeanie Leach and Laurel Dewhurst went down by one shot.

Our Division 4, Team 4 side had a bye, while it was also good to see our club members stay and enjoy our pizza night after pennant last Saturday.

Seven rinks played (56 players) for our first barefoot bowls night of the season, with two teams away.

The winners were Dudley’s Duds, consisting of Dudley Knight, Nola and Richard Bruton, while the runners-up were Robyn’s Rebels, consisting of Robyn Jolley, Ken Barry and Kevin Glen.

Melbourne Cup day was a well-attended and very sociable day at the club.

This Sunday we will have our annual Lakeside Wanderers skins day, with a full house of 30 teams (90 players) playing for prize money of $840.

A reminder for club members not playing that there will be plenty of work to do around the club, so please lend a hand.

Only 11 players enjoyed social bowls this week, with our midweek pennant teams playing on Wednesday because of the Melbourne Cup public holiday.

Winners were Keith Anderson and Grant Davies, with two wins and 21 shots.

In midweek pennant, our Division 1 team defeated Murray Downs by three shots, Robyn Jolley’s team of Danny Kelly, Ian Ross and Helen Jobling winning by three shots, and Janet Hamill’s team of Ken Hamill, Sally Meehan and Max Parsons having a draw.

Our Division 2 had a close game against Murray Downs, Jeanie Leaches’ team of Peter Snell, Ray Leach and Amber Moynihan going down by three shots, and Shirley Swan’s team of Ron Atkinson, Alec Jobling and Jenny Robertson going down by five.

TOOLEYBUC

TOOLEYBUC played Racecourse 4 last Saturday away, P.Gardner’s team the only winning rink as Racecourse 4 won by 26 shots overall.

Tomorrow, Tooleybuc will play away at Murray Downs 4.

Midweek pennant was played on Wednesday and Tooleybuc hosted Balranald, winning both rinks and finishing 15 shots up overall.

Next Tuesday Tooleybuc host Murray Downs 4.

MVPA

THE Murray Mallee Regional round robin event was played at the Murray Downs Bowls Club on Sunday, a most successful afternoon for the Murray Valley Playing Area.

Both the men and ladies won all three of their games, ending with our competition’s best result for many years.

Kylie Gardner, Lyndal Taylor, Alannah Taylor and Helen Frame (Racecourse) were crowned the top rink in the women’s section, while in the men’s section, it was Murray Downs’ John Caldwell, Kevin Rowe, Peter Brook and Chris Power who took off top spot.

On Sunday, the State Singles will see Dannielle Adams (Tooleybuc) and Lyndal Taylor (Racecourse) face off in the grand final.

In the men’s event, the semi-finals are Buck Lehmann (Murray Downs) v Norm Smith (Racecourse) and Brian Quaife (Swan Hill) v Martin Stephens (Moulamein).

The women’s final and men’s semi-finals will begin at 9.30am at the Swan Hill Bowls Club.
