Racecourse extend ladder lead

RACECOURSE continued their strong Division 1 Weekend Pennant season with a 29-shot win over Nyah District on Saturday.

The 81-52 result also extended Racecourse’s lead on top of the Division 1 ladder after round 8, with last year’s runners-up claiming victory on all three rinks and adding all 12 match points to their season tally.

Nyah District can consider themselves unlucky to have not broken through for victory on at least one rink however. Rex Howard and Glenn McKissack playing out a thrilling 21-20 match, with McKissack getting the nod after 25 ends.

Victories were much more comprehensive on the remaining rinks, with Norm Smith’s team defeating Bryan Smith’s combination by 18 shots and Mick Holyoak defeating Kent Coburn by 10.

Second-placed Murray Downs also continued their winning run, defeating Lake Boga by 14 shots.

If it wasn’t for a slow start, it may have been a vastly different result for Lake Boga, who trailed by a combined 23 shots across the three rinks after the first three ends.

The biggest turnaround came from Ken Hamill’s combination, who turned around a 5-0 deficit at the end of their third end to defeat Josh Thornton’s side 26-14.

Hamill’s was the only winning rink, with John Caldwell dominating Peter Philp 37-16 and Brian Lehmann defeating Daniel Kelly 27-22.

Swan Hill hosted Moulamein, the visitors escaping with a hard-fought four-shot win.

Very little separated the teams all day, Kerryn Evans’ combination proving the difference with a four-shot win over Glenn Evans’ side.

Moulamein’s Dennis Compton and Swan Hill’s Brian Quaife both secured one-shot victories for their clubs.
