Dominant weekend for ladder leaders

IT was a one-sided afternoon’s action in round 9 of the MVPA weekend pennant bowls season, when Racecourse, Murray Downs and Lake Boga all claimed 12-point match results.

Ladder leaders Racecourse were the most dominant, defeating fellow top-four aspirant Moulamein by 47 shots, 86-39.

Moulamein were no match for the green and yellow army, Mick Holyoak’s team producing a commanding 23-shot victory, while Norm Smith’s combination had a dominant 18-shot win over Martin Stephens.

Despite a far closer affair, Racecourse’s Glenn McKissack still took home the points to complete the clean sweep, defeating Garry Armstrong’s team 21-15.

Reigning premiers Murray Downs kept the pressure on, however, claiming victory on all three rinks against traditional rivals Swan Hill by 18 shots.

It was a far from dominant performance, with Swan Hill competitive on all three rinks right until the final ends.

Brian Lehmann and Josh Thornton’s teams both produced seven-shot wins over Glenn Evans and Gary McGrath respectively, while John Caldwell and Brian Quaife had the closest tussle for the afternoon, when Caldwell and his team of Michael Hollingworth, Luke Roberts and Kevin Rowe claimed a four-shot victory.

In another hard-fought contest, Lake Boga claimed a 17-shot win over the Nyah District.

It was a much-improved performance from the winless Demons, who had suffered some heavy defeats at the hands of Racecourse and Murray Downs in previous weeks.

The closest they got to winning a rink was in Rex Howard’s match-up against Peter Philp, who held a five-shot advantage after 25 ends.

The remaining two rinks resulted in six-shot wins to Ken Hamill and Daniel Kelly.

Lake Boga’s win gave them a 22-point lead over fifth-placed Swan Hill in the race for a finals berth.
