Bowls notes, August 30

SWAN HILL

SWAN Hill Bowls Club held a successful RSL Diggers Day, which combined with the club’s opening day last Sunday.

RSL vice-president Viv Holland welcomed everyone and recited the RSL remembrance ode, with Brian Richardson raising the flag.

About 60 bowlers from various clubs, including a visitor from San Remo, were all lined up to compete for the prizemoney, with two games played before afternoon tea.

Then the storm hit soon after, with torrential rain and hail flooding the greens and putting an end to the day’s play.

This meant there were a number of teams who finished with two wins, with countbacks required to determine the winners.

First prize was awarded to Ken O’Bree (Murray Downs), Vic Plumridge (Swan Hill) and Max Parsons (Lake Boga), with second place going to Jim Wilcox, Mary Hooper (Racecourse) and Shirley Swan (Lake Boga) and third place to Alan Marshman, Graeme Clark (Swan Hill) and Noel Lockhart (Racecourse).

The best-game winners to receive their money back were David Jonker’s team (first game) and Peter Furnell’s team (second game).

The raffle for RSL Legacy was generously supported, with $280 being handed over to the RSL. Many thanks to all those who participated.

Today is our usual Friday Frolic social game of 10 ends of bowls. Please enter your name by 2.30pm to be ready for play by 3pm.

All are welcome to join in the bowls and the activities that take place in the clubhouse following the game.

Next Friday, September 6, is our mini-tournament afternoon at 2pm, with entries to close at 1pm sharp.

Team and single entries are accepted for this event, with a $10 cost per player for the two games of 10 ends format. Prizemoney will be awarded to first, second and third placegetters.
