KERANG GOLF
ON a very blustery Thursday we had 20 willing players eager to enjoy two games of three-bowl triples.
However, after a few ends most players wished they had stayed at home.
Before commencing it was pleasing to see more of our club travellers had returned home, namely Jim and Sonia McLeish and Frank and Lorraine Ritchie, both couples commenting that the weather here was far worse than anything they had encountered during their winter sojourn.
It was obvious that the holidays must have been good as the pairing of Frank Ritchie and Sonia McLeish was the clear winner from Wayne Neville and John Duckworth.
At the other end of the scale, John Murphy and Neil Paul gratefully accepted the chocolates.
President Jim also made a special presentation to Laurie Gray and Gary Borg, who missed the chocolates by only one shot.
Come Sunday, the weather had changed for our opening day, which saw 42 players in attendance.
President Jim welcomed all, especially our new members, and before declaring the season opened asked our newest life members Dale Spinks and Frank Ritchie to send down the first official kitty and bowl of the new season.
As a novelty, president Jim placed a block of chocolate on the green and the closest bowl of Alan Hird’s ensured he would be in the good books this week.
Winners on the day were Frank Ritchie, Marie Miller and Sid Hutchinson (welcome back Sid) on a countback from Judy McKerrow, Mick Pors and John Murphy, both on 32 shots.
Close behind in third place were Gary Borg, Alan Hird and Russell Carter with 30 shots.
The encouragement award went to Robert Taylor, Craig Hicks and Greg Beck.
The lucky lead was won by Ron McKerrow, lucky second Bryce McLeish and lucky skip ‘Fonzie’ Taylor.
Jim thanked the ladies who provided a scrumptious afternoon tea, which was enjoyed by all.
This Friday we travel to Lake Boga for our annual practice match, with teams to be selected and sent to all early in the week.
Meet at the clubhouse at 11.30am or let a selector know that you are making your own way to Lake Boga.
Our night pennant will start shortly and any interested members of the public are asked to contact a committee member with their details.
It can be a team of three or single entries – we will be happy to enjoy your company.
Our captain’s/president’s day will be changed to Saturday, October 5, so please make a note your diary.
Finally, we wish a quick recovery to our normal scribe Howard McCllelland, who is recovering after surgery.
