MURRAY DOWNS

SOCIAL bowls last week was well attended with 19 bowlers taking part, congratulations to the winners Darryl Barry, Doug Witney and John Hart (Rich River), although the jackpot did not go off, so mounting up for a lucky winner.

Members rostered on for duty next week are Dawne Holland and Cath Parry.

Sadly our long serving member Geoff Seton-Stewart passed away last week.

Geoff was a member of Murray Downs Bowls for 37 years and was a very popular person around the club, he was a true gentleman and will be missed.

Our condolences are extended to his family.

A reminder of our Melbourne Cup tournament next Tuesday, November 5, which is an any combination, three bowl triples, comprising of three games of seven ends, with sweeps being run throughout the day.

Starting time is 10am, with entries to Dawne on 0402 020 996 or Carl on 0429 855 260 by Monday at 5pm.

There is no midweek pennant this week and will resume on the Tuesday, November 12.

Lists are on the noticeboard for entry into the club championships, with the closing date being Friday, November 15.

Congratulations to the Murray Downs members who were selected to represent the playing area at the annual Murray Mallee Region Round Robin to be played at Murray Downs this Sunday, good luck to all participants.

RACECOURSE

WE will be celebrating the opening of our new synthetic green on Friday, November 15, with all district players invited to an afternoon of bowls with a finger food buffet to follow.

Two games of 10 ends, comprising any combination, two bowls triples will start after the opening of the green at 3pm.

Entries to Kevin Vivian on 0427 353 243 by Tuesday, November 12 at 5pm, with early entries needed for catering purposes.

Congratulations to Norm Smith, Glenn McIntosh and Ron Wolfe who won back-to-back State Triples on Saturday and will now go on to play against the other regional winners in March.

Norm Smith, Mick Holyoak, David Jonkers, Shane Domaille and DJ Weaver will represent Racecourse with pride in the Murray Mallee Regional Sides matches on Sunday.

They will play for Murray Valley against Northern District, Sunraysia and Tyrrell.

In the women’s division, Kylie Gardner, Lyndal Taylor, Alannah Taylor and Kylie Bailey have the chance to impress the selectors and vie for a place in the combined Murray Mallee team.

Wednesday’s jackpot bowls was won by Bryan Bice and Bob McIntosh with two wins and +18 shots, while in second place, with one win and +4 shots, were Neville Smith, Helen Frame and Robin Roberts, with the jackpot failing to go off.

Night bowls was again well attended, with the winners Charlee Sheahan, Ryan Hulland, David Jonkers and Joanne Stevenson.

Club events are progressing, with the men’s club singles and 100 up are on the board, while the club triples need to get organised as soon as possible.

SWAN HILL

FRIDAY Frolic should see a good roll up for our social afternoon today, with almost perfect weather conditions forecast, similar to last week.

The jackpot sits at $92, with all who play bowls in with a chance of winning, so be sure to have your name in by 2.30pm for a 3pm start.

Please ring the club in advance on 5032 1772, with all welcome for bowls and the social activities that follow.

Last Friday, Geoff Fathers from Port Macquarie, NSW and Bill Maybury of Waikii, WA, enjoying a game with the 26 players.

Saturday Pennant last week saw Swan Hill’s Division 1 go down to Lake Boga 1 by three shots overall,with B. Husson’s rink making it three in a row, winning by one shot against D. Kelly, while F. Jacka’s team added nine shots, but 10 was not enough to cover K. Hamill’s 13 shot defeat of B. Quaife’s rink.

Division 2 journeyed to Balranald and even though G. Clark and J. Thompson’s teams won their rinks, they were unable to cover the loss on M. Balchin’s rink that Rod Lusty and crew commanded from the very start.

Tomorrow both teams play at home against Murray Downs 2 and Tooleybuc 1.

Midweek pennant saw Swan Hill 2 make their trip to Manangatang worthwhile, recording their first win for the season, with R. Poole’s rink defeating G. Muir by 10 and J. Thompson’s team winning by seven shots against G. Ryan.

Division 1 couldn’t keep up their winning streak from the week before, going down to ladder leader Racecourse 2 by 19 shots overall.

There will be no Midweek Pennant Cup week.

Melbourne Cup Day (Tuesday, November 5) is almost upon us with the Swan Hill Bowls Club the place to be for our annual Cup Day festivities, which will start at 11.30am.

Get your entries into the Cup sweeps, with chicken and salad buffet and sweets available from 12pm for $25, which includes one free drink of bubbly or orange juice.

For the energetic, there will be a short game of bowls until the running of the Cup, with a $5 entry.

Afternoon tea will end the day, with members asked to please bring a plate of either savoury or sweet for a delicious finish to the afternoon.

Make sure you put your names on the sheet on the notice board for catering purposes.

Those who have entered the A grade club championships in both men’s and ladies are asked to please keep your games going and make sure you put your entry fee in the box.

TOOLEYBUC players were happy to record their first win of the season in both Saturday and Midweek pennant this week.

Tooleybuc played at home last Saturday against Murray Downs 4 and won two out of the three rinks, recording an 11 shot win, 79 to 68, with the best rink on the day being that of A.Adams, comfortably winning by 16 shots, followed by a closer game with A.Smith’s rink winning by four shots and T.Armstrong’s rink battling hard, but going down by nine shots.

Tomorrow Tooleybuc will play Swan Hill 2 at Swan Hill, let’s hope we can continue this form.

Midweek pennant players also played at home on Tuesday against Lake Boga 2 and had a win by 18 shots, 58 to 40, winning both of the rinks.

T. Armstrong’s rink won by 17 shots and D. Adams’ rink had a closer contest, winning by one shot.

There will be no midweek pennant next week due to the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday, with the next game being on Tuesday, November 12 with Tooleybuc playing Racecourse 4 at Racecourse.

Good luck to D. Adams and T. Armstrong who will be representing Murray Valley at the Murray Mallee Region Round Robin to be played at Murray Downs on Sunday.

THE Murray Valley State Triples for both the men and ladies was played at Swan Hill on Sunday, November 27, with the men’s section seeing Norm Smith, Glenn McIntosh and Ron Wolfe win back-to-back titles after defeating Ken O’Bree, Ray Wilson and Clark Jenkins – 17/10.

The ladies section is still going, with two more rounds to play on Sunday, November 10.

On Sunday, November 3, the Murray Mallee Regional round robin will be held at Murray Downs at 9.30am, with all players to be there by 8.45am to get a shirt and stickers for their bowls.
