WHEN Katarni McGlashan and her siblings purchased the Moulamein Newsagency three years ago, they didn’t quite know what to expect.
Little did they know they would be in the midst of a worldwide pandemic within months of taking over the business.
“COVID was a tricky one,” Ms McGlashan said.
“We hadn’t worked that into the business plan.”
Ms McGlashan, along with her two brothers, sister and their respective partners purchased the business in July 2019.
Each member of the family plays a different role within the business and the newsagency is well supported by their five dedicated team members.
“They are a wonderful, vibrant bunch and each one brings something different to the business,” Ms McGlashan said.
While the “business savvy” owners and their employees were faced with numerous challenges throughout the pandemic, they also saw plenty of opportunities and were able to make the best of a bad situation.
The border bubble enabled them to expand their offerings, better catering to the needs of the local community.
“We had to evolve really quickly with the changing climate,” Ms McGlashan said, noting the closest neighbouring business hub was 70km away.
“With the loss of visitors to the area due to COVID-19, supply and demand became a little different.”
However, continually adapting to the surrounding environment has enabled the business to remain relevant and successful.
The business further expanded its offerings in July when it opened up a kitchen, providing a range of breakfast and lunch options for the many truckies and tourists passing through town.
Their efforts were recently recognised when they were named finalists in the 2022 Campaspe Murray Business Awards, following their nomination in the Best in Retail category.
Campaspe Shire Council deputy mayor Colleen Gates congratulated finalists on their outstanding achievement.
“Over the last few years, our business community has been through an exceedingly challenging time,” Cr Gates said.
“These awards exemplify the strength, resilience and resolution of businesses on both sides of the river.”
Ms McGlashan said the business was proud to be a finalist.
“It’s really special to know we’ve been recognised for all the hard work we put in,” she said.
