Paterson raises the stakes

WHETHER a Sunday roast, or a juicy steak, a cut of Australian beef can be the perfect reward after a hard day’s work.

For those who produce the meat, the recognition of the Meat Standards Australia Excellence in Eating Quality Awards is just as pleasing.

In the 2023 awards, one Balranald beef producer has claimed the title of Most Outstanding MSA Beef Producer – Feedlot of their region.

The awards, hosted by Meat & Livestock Australia, acknowledge those across the nation who consistently deliver beef of superior eating quality.

That quality is based on more than 1.7 million taste tests conducted across 13 countries, by more than 250,000 consumers, and considers factors from paddock to plate.

It was this level of standard that saw JHW Paterson & Son in Balranald recognised as the most outstanding Feedlot producer in NSW and ACT.

It’s the second year in a row that the farm has received the prestigious award.

MSA program manager David Packer said award recipients were “the best of the best when it comes to producing consistently outstanding beef”.

“This is the 25th year of the MSA program and in that time, it has become the world-leading eating quality grade program for Australian red meat,” Dr Packer said.

“It is a key driving force behind the quality of Australian red meat, so these awards are a prestigious achievement for the producers.

“(Winners) must achieve high eating quality performance for MSA graded cattle during the 2021-22 and 2022-23 financial years and supply consistent MSA cattle within the top 50 per cent percentile for that state and feed type.”
