A FAMILY-owned business from Swan Hill is making significant strides in addressing one of broadacre farming’s persistent challenges: wheel track compaction.
Established in 1982, Grizzly Engineering has long been a trusted name in Australian agriculture.
Their latest innovation, the Wheel Track Renovator 2, is designed to combat the detrimental effects of soil compaction caused by heavy machinery in controlled traffic farming systems.
“Wherever the tractor goes, it compacts the soil,” Grizzly Engineering marketing manager Skye Poltrock said.
“That wheel track forms a depression, and it’s not just bad for seed establishment, it causes erosion, runoff, and reduces yield.
“The Wheel Track Renovator 2 is designed to reverse that damage.”
The Renovator 2 boasts several enhancements over its predecessor, including hydraulic adjustment, improved depth control, and a trailed design that simplifies hookup.
It operates efficiently at speeds ranging from 15 to 25 km/h, capable of filling tracks up to 350mm deep in a single pass.
“It’s a huge step forward,” Mr Poltrock said.
“The new version takes everything we’ve learned and improves it.
“It’s more responsive, more adaptable, and simply better suited for today’s farming systems.”
Unveiled at the 2024 Mallee Machinery Field Days, the Renovator 2 garnered significant attention. It was later honoured with two awards: Machine of the Year at the Australian National Field Days, and the Elmore Field Days’ Australian Machine of the Year.
Grizzly’s commitment to innovation is deeply rooted in farmer feedback.
“We don’t copy,” Mr Poltrock said.
“We build from the ground up, based on feedback and testing.
“Most of our R&D comes from what our customers are telling us they need.
“If we can design something better, we do it here, locally.”
In addition to the Renovator 2, Grizzly offers the Jack and Little Jack deep rippers, essential tools for breaking through hardpan compaction and accessing subsoil moisture.
These machines feature robust designs with adjustable tine spacings and are available in various configurations to suit different farming needs.
“In a dry spring, a well-set deep ripping program can make the difference between a disappointing crop and a strong finish,” Mr Poltrock said.
“It helps break open the soil profile, improving water infiltration and root penetration.”
With over four decades of experience, Grizzly Engineering continues to support Australian farmers with durable, locally-designed equipment.
Their products are not only used nationwide but have also found markets globally.
At this year’s Mallee Machinery Field Days on August 6 and 7, attendees will have the opportunity to see the Wheel Track Renovator 2 and the Jack the Ripper range.
