Central Murray netball round 12 match reports

Tigers’ form stays hot

NYAH-Nyah West United’s finals hopes have taken a massive hit following their eight-goal loss to sixth placed Woorinen at the weekend.

The 42-34 result continues the Tigers’ hot form, winning their past four matches and putting themselves firmly in the finals equation, as the Demons fall two games behind fifth-placed Cohuna.

“It was a fantastic win by the ladies, the game was tough with lots of momentum swings which didn’t faze us I felt,” Woorinen coach Tayla Bennett said.

“It allowed for us to up our work rate and tidy things up and get the game back on our terms.

The energy was positive, competitive and consistent amongst the girls and while we know we have a tough run home, we want to give ourselves the best chance possible to play finals, so every game counts and each scoreline will be just as important.

“We had another junior take the court this week for a full game and Olivia Free complemented Tessa (Demaria) very well in that defensive line-up.

“Willow Conlan was also a standout this week, she has come so far during the season and matching up with defenders a second time around, she is showing them just how much she has improved.”

Chloe Threadgold, Taylen Blachford and Matika Mitchell were the better players for NNW United.

Top team’s tough win

LAKE Boga continued their unbeaten start to the season, claiming their 11th straight win with a hard-fought seven-goal victory over Balranald.

After being tested in the first half, the Magpies responded with a 12-7 third quarter, turning a three-goal half-time deficit into a two-goal lead at the final break.

There was no let up from Lake Boga in the final quarter, with the premiership favourites going on to record a 45-38 win.

After leading for a large portion of the match, the result was frustrating for Balranald co-coach Elli-Jane Pollard.

“There was a level of disappointment amongst the playing group after the game,” Pollard said.

“A few undisciplined errors at crucial times was frustrating for the girls, but we have assessed it and we’ll continue to work hard on eliminating that from our game.

“Credit to Lake Boga and the way they go about their netball, they are a great side and there is a reason they are sitting on top of the ladder undefeated so far this season.”

Lake Boga coach Anne-Marie Stewart was impressed with her team’s ability to absorb the Roos’ strong start.

“It was a good win, we showed great patience and stuck to what we do well,” Stewart said.

“(Balranald) came out hard and tough at us and we held strong, we made some changes at half-time to create more opportunities, which helped place us in front at three-quarter-time.”

Katie Hepburn (32 goals) and Lily Brennan were the best players for Lake Boga, while Bec Harvey was strong for Balranald, shooting 30 of her team’s 38 goals.

Key goals for Kangas

COHUNA have returned to the winners’ list with a dominant 21-goal win over Koondrook-Barham.

The percentage boost gained from the 60-39 scoreline maintained fifth spot for the Kangas ahead of a crucial clash against Tyntynder this weekend.

After a tight opening term, the Kangas blew the game open with a 17-6 second quarter.

Cohuna coach Georgia Anderson was impressed with her team’s full-court performance.

“We’re so glad to feel a win again, Koondrook-Barham have really improved, which is great for them, it certainly wasn’t easy an easy game by any means,” Anderson said.

“I was happy with our attack end, it flowed well for majority of the day.

“Taylor Hird in wing attack was just unstoppable, she’s honestly a star in the making and our goalers got their timing right too.

“Down the court our defenders picked off plenty of intercepts and their pressure allowed us to gain control of the score and margin.

“Kobie McIvor in GA was our best, I was really happy with her game and her adjustment to instruction, and Lily Guerrin played really well in wing defence, her intensity in that position had a ripple effect which is what I love.”

Swans blitz Saints

SWAN Hill have continued their strong form with a 29-goal win over Tooleybuc-Manangatang.

A lack of concentration at key moments hurt the Saints, who allowed the reigning premiers to score seven consecutive goals in the first quarter on their way to a five-goal lead at quarter-time, with the visitors going on to score 20 goals in a dominant final quarter.

It was a difficult day for Tooleybuc-Manangatang, who lost goal shooter Shaniah Nunn to an ankle and Taylah Morris to a calf injury in the second quarter, forcing the home side into a reshuffle.

The 70-41 victory continued Swan Hill’s winning streak, which now stands at straight wins.

Wing attack Holly Rogers and goal shooter Zoe Morris, who shot 51 of the Swans’ 70 goals, were named as the visitors’ better players.

Jayda Plant, who moved into goal attack following the injury to Nunn, and goaler Summer Blachford, who scored 21 goals, were Tooleybuc-Manangatang’s better players.
