WOORINEN have finished their season with a narrow eight-point win, despite Tyntynder ending their own campaign full of running and pressuring the Tigers for much of the match.
Despite claiming the four points in the 13.14 (92) to 13.6 (84) win, Woorinen will miss out on playing finals, after Cohuna and Balranald both recorded victories.
It will be the first time since 2011 that Woorinen have failed to make it past the home-and-away season.
Woorinen coach Marcus Demaria said missing finals would hurt his players after all the effort they put into this campaign.
“It’s a bit disappointing to not make finals this year,” Demaria said.
“Especially after all the effort and time we put in throughout the season, it’s not the outcome that we would have wanted.”
Both teams started off the match well, with Tyntynder’s Roy George kicking the first two goals for the Bulldogs, before Woorinen started to pull away after kicking the next six goals unanswered to end the quarter 25 points in front.
Tyntynder fought back in the second quarter, piling on the pressure and displaying fast ball movement to keep their opposition within reach, with the Tigers taking a 23-point lead into the main break.
Woorinen started to struggle in the third quarter, when the home side reduced the margin to just two goals.
The Tigers’ ball movement into their forward line was solid, but their possession of the footy was a problem.
Demaria agreed their retention of the ball had been an ongoing problem for his side this season.
“We couldn’t really contain the footy at times,” he said.
“At times, you can clearly see what the defence can do, but at times we just tend to fall away.”
Tyntynder continued to push throughout a tense final quarter, but in the end were just unable to close the gap, with Woorinen holding on by the scruff of the neck to win by eight points.
Jayden Magro led the way with six goals, while Marcus Wattie, Roy George, Matthew Gillbee, Mick Dedini and Isaiah Bull were also among their team’s better players in their final match of the season.
After the match, Demaria was quick to praise several leaders within his playing squad, with Jye Barry, Lachlan Warburton and Taylor Cameron finishing off strong seasons with another consistent performance.
“‘Colli’ (William Collicoat) played well for us across half-forward, hitting us up,” Demaria said.
“Brock McLean and Jye Barry were also pretty good today and Taylor Cameron also had a good performance, especially considering the fact he had a groin injury this week.”
