Swans strike early

A 31-goal first half was enough for Swan Hill to put their match against NNW United to bed before half-time, with the reigning premiers recording a 23-goal win on Saturday.

The first-half onslaught opened up a 20-goal lead by half-time, before the Swans coasted to a 52-29 victory.

Zoe Morris also returned from injury for the Swans to shoot 30 goals before being rested for most of the second half.

Swan Hill co-coach Madeleine Nalder praised the way her players came out and attacked the contest from the opening minutes.

“We knew (NNW United) would be a tough opponent based on their previous games, so we knew that we had to come out firing and give ourselves the best possible chance by having a good start,” Nalder said.

“We were pretty happy with our first quarter, which gave us something to build on and we kind of went from there.

“Tess Meney was among our better players, she just hustled all day as a defender and created many turnovers, and Holly Rogers was really strong for us in the midcourt as well.”

Along with Morris, the Swans were also well served by Casey Frame in goals, the pair combining for 50 of their team’s 52 goals for the day.

For the Demons, wing defence Lucy Millard and wing attack Shania Decker were among their better players, with Sarah Gaskin their leading scorer with 17 goals.
