New life to an old link at Swan Hill District Health

THERE were bittersweet emotions at Swan Hill District Health (SHDH) last month when new mum Ebony Gleeson was reunited with the doctor who treated her late mother.

Dr Ernan Hession delivered Ebony in 2000 at SHDH.

Ebony’s mother Veronica was diagnosed with leukaemia during her pregnancy and birth was induced at 37 weeks.

Sadly, Veronica died two years later.

Ebony, of Swan Hill, gave birth to her first child, Ollie, at SHDH on September 7, and Dr Hession got to meet him.

Adding to a reunion that highlighted the continuity of care provided by local doctors over four generations, Ebony’s nanna Lyla, who helped raise her, is a resident at Logan Lodge.

“Dr Hession played a massive part in Mum’s journey and him getting to meet Ollie was a celebration of that,” Ebony said.

“It was pretty surreal to show Ollie to Dr Hession.

“He didn’t know I was pregnant until he came into the room and saw I had a baby. He asked to get a photo … it was really good.

“I don’t remember any of the time he treated Mum, but he has told me a little bit here and there.

“I think he found the cancer as the treating doctor when she was pregnant.”
