Community spirit drives vaccinations in Murray River Council

MURRAY River Council residents are getting the COVID-19 jab out of a sense of responsibility to the wider community.

Lakeside Caravan Park co-owner and manager Sandy Peeters said she believed this was due to the region having an older population, people with health problems, and young people working in the hospitality and aged-care industries.

“I believe these factors are resulting in them feeling a responsibility for our health and to the community,” Mrs Peeters said.

Workers from farms nearby who are staying at the caravan park are also rolling up their sleeves to get vaccinated.

“All of the backpackers have been vaccinated, which is good because it’s for their own safety and for the safety of their workplace,” Mrs Peeters said.

She said in looking after one another, people were also hesitant to travel to Melbourne for health and medical care.

“The ones that are going to Melbourne are doing the right thing by quarantining when they return,” she said.

“And we’re only going to Bendigo if it’s absolutely necessary or there are no other alternatives.”

Barham business The Collectors Hub co-owner Darren Ingwersen said he believed people were getting vaccinated so they could “go and do things”.
