WHLM events to prevent gender-based violence

WOMEN’S Health Loddon Mallee (WHLM), the regional women’s health service for the area, is urging the community to get behind the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign.

This year’s campaign “Respect Women: Call it Out,” set by Respect Victoria, aims to support the community in understanding what respect means, what it looks like, and how to put it into practice in their everyday lives.

WHLM will be hosting a series of online discussions, workshops, and learning opportunities over the 16 Days campaign, with various event partners and collaborators from across the Loddon Mallee.

These include

– a panel discussion featuring industry experts discussing consent and how to support young people with effective sex education;

– a webinar with human rights advocate and nominee for Vic Australian of the Year, Nyadol Nyuon;

– And an interactive workshop where people can learn and share tips on how to effectively call out gender-based violence and harmful attitudes in their communities.

WHLM are also encouraging people to check out other local and national initiatives taking place between November 25 and December 10 which are raising awareness and encouraging action towards ending violence against women and girls.

“When gender equality exists, we all benefit,” WHLM chief executive Tricia Currie said.

Domestic violence rates and gender inequalities in Australia have been exacerbated by the pandemic.

Currently one woman on average is murdered by a current or former partner each week, and 50 per cent of women have reported experiencing sexual harassment.

Violence against women and girls is preventable and the evidence points toward the need to address structural inequalities and challenge harmful gender norms, which are at the core of gender-based violence.WHLM events and dates:- Bystander Action Panel – Real World Responses to Gender Inequality: November 24, 10am – 11.30am
