New life to be brought to decommissioned McCallum Street site

THE use of Indigenous trees and shrubs and the development of a bicycle track for children to promote exercise have been put forward as suggestions for a decommissioned water channel through Swan Hill.

Council recently received feedback after it recently released concept plans for the number nine channel reserve, between Woorinen Road and Stradbroke Avenue.

The community feedback gave the public the chance to suggest changes and ask questions regarding the development, which will take place later this year.

Included in the plans is a 975-metre concrete shared path which will be 2.5m wide and will run down McCallum Street from Woorinen South Road to Stradbroke Avenue.

The designs released have been created in alignment with the recommended planning and future strategy of the McCallum Street precinct, with the old pathway to be replaced by landscaping to accompany the new facilities.

Council director of development and planning Heather Green was excited about the project and creating the new space which could be enjoyed by the whole community.

“The shared path will meander through grassed areas, rest areas and native plantings creating a green corridor,” Ms Green said.

“Our community has provided some great feedback on the draft plans and expressed excitement that the old number nine channel is being reimagined.”

Part of the planning was expected to include lighting treatments along the path to increase safety for users of the pathway, with the feedback currently being evaluated before the plans were finalised and work could begin.

“We are excited to include lighting treatments along the shared path, creating a safe space for community members to walk, run, bike and enjoy,” Ms Green said.

“It is expected the final designs will be made available to the community soon.”
