SEA Lake brothers James (JJ) and Matthew Isherwood have been recognised for their ongoing contribution to the local community.
They were awarded the Sea Lake District Young Citizen of the Year award during the township’s Australia Day breakfast.
Surprised by their nomination, the humble duo said they enjoyed helping people and making a difference where they could.
The award recognised their dedication and commitment which went into organising the Hampers for Farmers campaign, as well as their involvement with the Sea Lake RSL.
JJ said The Hampers for Farmers campaign derived from a need to help drought-stricken farmers in 2018, noting they saw firsthand the difficulties many were facing during a holiday to the Broken Hill region.
Not one to turn a blind eye to the situation that they faced, the boys returned home and with the help of their school community, put a plan into place.
Inspired by Mary MacKillop’s words, ‘Never see a need without doing something about it’, the group worked tirelessly to bring the project to fruition.
The group then set out on the 659km journey to deliver their goods, which included more than 60 large hampers, hay, grain, dog food, water and vouchers to the small outback New South Wales town of White Cliffs.
“It was quite amazing,” JJ said of the experience.
“The local community was very appreciative of us.
“We made a difference in someone’s life and that’s what we were aiming for.”
The brothers still have a strong bond with the township today and have formed lifelong friends with many of the people they helped.
JJ and Matthew continue to make a difference and more recently have dedicated their time to ensuring the longevity of the Sea Lake RSL sub-branch.
They have played a major role in the RSL beautification project and establishment of a memorial garden.
Matthew is also preparing to lace up his boots and take part in the March On Challenge.
He will walk 96km throughout March – the length of the Kokoda Track – to support Soldier On Australia, a not-for-profit veteran support organisation.
“I’m hoping to raise $2000,” Matthew said.
With lots of plans to continue to give back to the community, JJ and Matthew said they were very surprised by their Australia Day award but were grateful they could share the experience.
“It’s nice to be able to share the award,” JJ said.
“We like to help people where we can.”
