Teacher emotional as she shaves for a cause

LINDA Gannon has braved a bald head for the third time for The World’s Greatest Shave in an effort raise money for cancer research.

The education support teacher at Swan Hill Specialist School was assisted by colleague Emma Billing and some of the Specialist School students as she lost her locks.

Ms Gannon’s hair will be donated to Sustainable Salons, who will use the hair for wigs. She will also send the off cuts and dregs of hair off as well, which can be used for things like oil spills.

Raising $4,378, Ms Gannon said her motivation behind the shave was because of her brother who has cancer is about to undergo chemo, and for a child who attended the school with leukaemia.

“There are so many different cancers out there, and this is one way I can actually do something about it,” Ms Gannon said.

Ms Gannon was a bit teary as she told The Guardian how she was “proud” that she could share this experience with the students.

“They can see that people are out there in the community, so when they see the leukaemia foundation they can relate to it,” Ms Gannon said.

“I’ll tell you what, there is a great big lump in my throat, but it’s a happy one.”

“It is a great experience for all the kids to see. They might want to do it one day themselves.”

Having participated in the World’s Greatest Shave two times before, Ms Gannon says this shave will be her last.

“I’m not going to grow it again, it’s too much of a hassle,” she said.

And despite a bit of an obvious tan line, Ms Gannon was happy with the overall result.

“I wear my baldness proudly,” she said.

“It’s really good to be actually able to see it like this, and to know that it is going to be used for people with cancer.”
