Plenty of Easter variety in Balranald

Good Friday Appeal

THE Easter weekend will kick off with the Good Friday Appeal at the Balranald Ex-Services Club.

From 4pm-6pm, there will be heaps of gifts, vouchers and experiences, which have been kindly donated by local businesses, up for grabs with the spinning wheel. All proceeds from the spinning wheel with go to the Royals Children’s Hospital.

Balranald Ex-Services Club general manager Jacquii Richardson says the appeal has been well supported in the past.

“Last year was fantastic, it was a huge turnout,” Ms Richardson said.

“We’re hoping for the same sort of thing this year.”

After the spinning wheel the club will have its normal Friday night draw full of Easter prizes, followed by the members draw later in the evening.

Balranald Goat Races and Cowpat Lotto

THE Balranald Goat Races will again take place this year.

Created by Balranald Football Netball Club members a couple of years ago as a fundraising idea, committee member Bronwyn Brougham said past races have been “greatly supported by locals and people from away”.

“Everyone has a bit of fun,” she said.

The goats used in the races are donated by local landholders from Balranald to Ivanhoe. All the goats are put into a yard with a number on them, and participants can buy a goat for a certain amount of money. There are 10 race heats with 10 goats in each heat, and the winner of each heat moves in to the final race. There is prize money for the winning goat owner.

As well as the goat race, the Cowpat Lotto will also take place again this year. A paddock is broken up into 300 squares. You can purchase a square, and if a cow leaves a pat on your square, you win $1000.

Food and drinks will be available throughout the day, and there will also be a range of kid activities including the longest golf ball hit. The day will finish with dinner and a disco in the evening.

“It’s just a bit of good, country fun,” Ms Brougham said.

Gates open at 1pm on Saturday at the Balranald Football Oval. It will cost $15 for general entry, while Under 18’s can enter for free. To find out more or get involved, contact the Balranald Football Club committee through Facebook.

Easter egg hunt

ON Sunday, April 17 at 10am, an Easter egg hunt will take place at the Balranald Discovery Centre. There will also be a big slide, jumping castle, laser tag, and other fun things to do. This is a free event.

Twilight Market

LATER on Sunday evening at 6pm, there will be a twilight market at the Discovery Centre, which includes a variety of stalls as well as live entertainment.

The Gallery

THERE are a few exhibitions to check out at The Gallery over the Easter weekend. A display of artwork by Griffith artist Rhonda Miranda will be available over the weekend and until the end of May. Visitors can also see The Silence of the Plains, which consists of oil paintings predominantly portraying the beauty and tranquillity of local plains and waterways as well as flora.

The Gallery is also hosting The Art of Football, a lively display of original artwork by Melbourne artists supported by Frizzie Carter’s amazing collection of Balranald Football Club memorabilia.

The Gallery’s Easter sale over the weekend, with everything 10 per cent off, including lay-by purchases.
