Great yarn unfolds across town

DESPITE the cold, dreary weather outside, Woorinen WinterFest’s yarn bombing competition means the town is well rugged up.

Sometimes referred to as guerilla knitting or yarn storming, yarn bombing is essentially the practice of using knitted or crocheted yarn to cover objects, normally public objects like trees, fences and signs.

This is what you will see when you drive through the streets on Woorinen – fences, trees and poles donning all things yarn, including knitted blankets, crocheted ornaments, and even shoes!

Secretary of the Woorinen District Progress Association Lorri Lambert said this was the second time the town has participated in yarn bombing, but the first time they have made it a competition.

“Winter is such a cold and miserable time,” Ms Lambert said.

“It’s something to cheer the place up with a bit of colour, and to raise interest in the festival and get the community involved.”

The first prize winner of the competition will receive a heater and a crocheted rug. Second place will get a heated throw rug blanket, and there will be a $50 Rhimahden Nursery voucher for third place.

To enter, simply post pictures of your yarn bombing display on the Woorinen WinterFest Facebook page by June 12, and send your contact details, including address and phone number, via Facebook Messenger, email woorinendistrict@gmail.com, or post it to PO Box 215 Woorinen South 3588.

Judging will commence a couple of days before the Woorinen WinterFest, with the prize winners to be announced at the festivities.

If you have further enquires, contact Lisa Ashdown on 0438 168 207 or Lorri Lambert on 0467 879 261.
