Community gathering helps reconnect after Covid

MALLEE Aboriginal COVID Response Network held their Kalintyerra community gathering at Riverside Park on Friday.

The word Kalintyerra means ‘to love one another’ in Wemba Wemba language.

Event coordinator Tayla Donaczi said the aim of the event was just to help people reconnect after a tough couple of years.

“This is our opportunity now to come together and bring culture back to everyone in the community because we weren’t able to do that during lockdown,” Ms Donaczi said.

The gathering included kids face painting with Aboriginal symbols, painting workshops, a weaving circle, emu feather workshop, smoking ceremony, and a dance performance.

“I definitely think it’s an opportunity to heal after being

disconnected for the last couple of years because of COVID,” Ms Donaczi said.

“Just being together

I think and doing cultural traditions is really healing.”
