That’ll do, pigs: Nandaly comes alive for porcine full-bloods

WHILE Swan Hill celebrated its winter racing carnival last week, hundreds of punters also converged on Nandaly over the long weekend.

And while Sunday’s event was one of the most hotly contested in recent years – featuring an in-form field of thoroughbred racers – there wasn’t a horse in sight.

The arrival of Noah’s Thoroughbred Racing Pigs had heads turning and swelled the town’s population from 39 to a few hundred.

Organisers hope the fundraising event, hosted by the Nandaly Community Hotel, will become a permanent fixture on the local calendar.

The town held its inaugural pig races in 2019, and while the event was a huge success, its return was put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

For its long-awaited return at the weekend, the event featured five races, which included The Ham it Up Cup, The Pickled Pork Plate and the Apple Sauce and Crackling Dash.

The racing was action-packed and far from boar-ing as the field of pigs entertained the crowd with their quirky antics as they made their way to the finish line, in a bid to bring home the bacon.

With proceeds from the event donated to the Sea Lake Nandaly Tigers and Ouyen United sporting clubs, and the community hotel, the fun-filled day was well supported.

The day included live entertainment and a show-and-shine event.
