Small art raises big money for Fight Cancer Foundation

THE Swan Hill branch of Fight Cancer Foundation has raised more than $3000 through the 9 by 5 art exhibition at the Swan Hill Regional Art Gallery.

The exhibition, which included more than 60 paintings (nine by five inches) by local artists, ran from April 1 to May 15.

The Fight Cancer Foundation branch members worked with over 30 local artists leading up to the April opening, to create and exhibit more than 50 artworks.

Branch member Emily Caruso said the diversity of the artwork sparked broad community appeal and excited discussion about the public’s favourite pieces.

“The opening night event was well attended by the arts community, Fight Cancer Foundation supporters and special guest, Fight Cancer Foundation managing director Eric Wright,” she said.

“This fundraising event concluded with an online auction in May and artworks from this collection have been sent to their new homes all across Australia.

“In addition to the exhibition and auction, this event included the raffle of the signed, limited edition, framed print Some Morning, which was painted and donated by local artist Marg Lewis. Pakenham resident John Crow was the lucky winner of this sought-after prize.”

As a result of combined efforts, Graeme Hayes Real Estate were able to present the Fight Cancer Foundation Swan Hill branch with a cheque for $3255 raised from the sale of the artworks from the exhibition.

“These funds will assist Fight Cancer Foundation to continue with their specially designed education support programs that operate in hospitals across Australia and cater to children living with cancer who are undergoing or recovering from treatment,” Ms Caruso said.

“Additionally, funds will also be provided to Fight Cancer Foundation accommodation centres now established in Albury, Hobart and Melbourne, providing much-needed comfortable and affordable accommodation for seriously ill patients and their families who must travel long distances to access medical treatment.”

The Fight Cancer Foundation’s next big event is their red ball in Melbourne on September 10, with tickets still available.

Closer to home, the Swan Hill branch’s next event is the Swan Hill Film Festival, on October 21 and 22 at Showbiz Cinemas Swan Hill, with films to be announced soon.
