Vinnies’ indigenous action

THE St Vincent de Paul Society in Balranald is becoming better in recognising their Aboriginal heritage and connections.

On Thursday August 24, members and volunteers gathered at the Balranald Vinnies shop for the unveiling of their new Acknowledgement of Traditional Custodians plaque.

Vinnies were privileged to have Jedda Kelly welcome them to country, before attendees heard about the new Reconciliation Action Plan, which came about when the Society consulted and yarned, producing a set of documents – guiding principles, cultural protocol, implementation strategy and the actual Reconciliation Action Plan itself.

“Our vision for reconciliation is for a just and equitable society; a society characterised by strong and meaningful relationships between the First Peoples of Australia and non-Indigenous Australians; a society in which Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, cultures, histories, knowledges and connections to country are valued and celebrated,” the plan reads.

Joining the Vinnies members and volunteers at the event was members of the Balranald Aboriginal Land Council, Maari Ma Aboriginal Health Services and other community members.

This event was just one of many actions included in the St Vincent de Paul Society NSW new Reconciliation Action Plan, which is being rolled out in Vinnies buildings across the state.
