SHOW enthusiasts are set for an adrenalin-pumping “axe-tion” packed weekend with chainsaw racing set to feature at this year’s show for the first time.
Midland Axemen’s Association committee member Brett Cole said while traditional wood chopping events have always attracted a large following at agricultural shows and events, the Hot Saws provided a totally new element to the sport.
“They’re loud, fast and quite a spectacle,” Mr Cole said, adding Swan Hill was the first country show in Australia to host such an event.
Precision, speed and skill will be put to the test when these high-powered chainsaws take to the stage.
In what has been dubbed a powerful, loud and dynamic event, the Hot Saw competition is sure to attract a large following, and was made possible thanks to Stihl Shop Swan Hill and Forest Logging Balranald.
Mr Cole said Hot Saws were customised chainsaws, powered by various engines such as motorbike or jet ski engines.
Competitors need to maintain full control of their high-powered machines while cutting three 16-inch wheels in a race against the clock.
While Mr Cole is out of action and awaiting a knee reconstruction, he said this year’s wood chopping event would attract a large competitor base, with around 35 participants set to take part in the competition.
“During COVID there were no events, it was a complete shut down,” Mr Cole said.
“It’s good that life is getting back to some normality and the young guys are keen to get back into it.”
Hot off the back of the Royal Adelaide Show, some of the industry’s best athletes are now preparing for the Swan Hill event.
Among those attending the Swan Hill show will be world champions Laurence O’Toole Sr and Jr.
“It’s a great spectator sport and gets everyone involved,” Mr Cole said.
“It’s also a sport where age isn’t a barrier.”
Meanwhile, Swan Hill Stihl Shop owner Colin Hayward said he was looking forward to the event, which would be a major feature at this year’s show.
“With Stihl Timbersports Wood Chopping and Chainsaw Racing becoming a huge drawcard worldwide over recent years, we’re pleased to be able to bring competitors from this sport to the show this year,” Mr Hayward said.
“It’s not often that country people get to see world class athletes in action.
“These Hot Saw beasts can weigh up to 30kg and produce up to 60hp.
“Along with a good field of competitors in the wood chop events, we are going to see a number of Hot Saws in action, along with a good number of Production Hot Saws and Stock Saws as well.”
The wood chopping events will take place on Tyntynder Oval.
The wood chopping feature demonstration gets underway from 10.30am Friday, while the wood chopping competition and Hot Saws events will take place on Saturday from 10.30am.
