Right headspace for fun

MENTAL Health Week activities make a return to Swan Hill this year after a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19.

The state-wide initiative aims to bring the community together in a week of different events, starting on October 10 and ending on October 14, to promote community connection as a way to support mental health.

Headspace youth worker and MHW committee chairperson Kathryn Hindle said this year’s theme, Acceptance, Belonging and Connection, was a chance for all the community to get together and have some fun, while acknowledging how important mental health and wellbeing is to us all.

“While things are certainly getting better in regards to mental health, we still see a stigma associated with a person experiencing mental health challenges,” she said.

“Events like MHW help break down stigma and promote community connection which is positive for everyone in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

“It’s also a chance to find out about what services are out there locally and how to access them.

“It’s also a chance to meet the teams of each service.”

Some of the events planned across this year’s MHW include a community day in the park and a community alcohol and other drugs forum.

“The fun day in the park has been a success in the past and is preceded by a community walk where people gather to show their support for those living with mental health challenges,” Ms Hindle said.

“We will make our way as a large group to Riverside Park where a free community barbecue and a host of fun activities will take place.

“We welcome all community to get involved, especially after the tough few years we have all experienced due to lockdowns.

“Community service organisations will host the event and there will be something for everyone to enjoy so we urge everyone to get involved.”

Responding to AOD in the Mallee is a free educational forum held at the town hall on October 11, from 9.30am-2.30pm.

Visiting guest speakers along with local service providers will provide information in the event hosted by The Salvation Army.

Other activities include colouring for connection and Mental Health First Aid training.
