A gala celebration of Aboriginal culture

THE NAIDOC Ball is making a return to Swan Hill this month, with a gala event planned for Saturday.

The ball had become a popular fixture on Swan Hill’s social calendar, but like most gatherings it fell victim to COVID-19 lockdowns.

Mallee Aboriginal Covid Response Network is this year’s organising committee and they are planning to ensure the ball returns with a bang.

Committee member Tayla Donaczy said the formal event was jam-packed with entertainment and she hoped all the community will get behind the night that aims to celebrate Aboriginal culture.

“We have a great band booked this year, The Stray Blacks, along with local Aboriginal dance group WIRAN and visiting dance group Brothers in Arms,” she said.

“We will also have our traditional crowning of Mr and Mrs NAIDOC for best dressed and a two-course sit-down meal will be provided.

“The event makes up part of NAIDOC Week celebrations which was in July and we welcome everyone to come along and celebrate with us.”

NAIDOC, a celebration of First Nations cultures, was created in 1956 to organise national events and in 1991 was expanded to recognise Torres Strait Islander people and cultures.

The ball will be held at the Swan Hill town hall and will kick off at 6.30pm

Tickets are $35 and can be purchased at Mallee District Aboriginal Service (MDAS) located at 70 Nyah Road, Swan Hill.

The event is strictly 18+.
