Lend the library your name ideas

SWAN Hill Regional Library’s outreach vehicle is turning one and to celebrate, they’re offering the chance to name it.

The library is asking for community suggestions for the vehicle’s name, a year after it replaced the old mobile library.

Libraries manager Camille Cullinan said the new vehicle had allowed the library to reach further than before.

“We actually downsized to a smaller vehicle to allow us to access more places,” she said.

“Obviously with the larger articulated vehicle it was a bit too large to get into some places.

“We’ve actually been able to pick up a few more stops thanks to the smaller vehicle.

“The smaller vehicle has allowed us to get to places like the Lake Boga community garden and Woorinen preschool, as well as other preschools.”

Ms Cullinan said the library outreach vehicle had quickly grown the number of users.

“The response has been really positive,” she said.

“I know that a lot of people really loved our articulated vehicle, especially school children.

“I think the fact that they can still access the books and interact with the lovely staff on-board means it’s really kept the kids engaged.

“This vehicle does have a wheelchair hoist on it, so it is accessible to everyone in the community.”

Ms Cullinan said the naming competition was the idea of the vehicle’s driver.

“Our new driver, who started a couple of months ago, thought it would be a great way for us to engage with the community,” she said.

“Especially at schools and preschools, for some of the younger people in the community that we visit.

“We want to give it a name that might mean a bit more to them than just the library outreach vehicle.

“The competition is going to be open until the end of July, so I anticipate the name will be announced around early August.”

Ms Cullinan said the library also took the vehicle out to community events.

“The vehicle is also available to attend community events,” she said.

“We’re looking to engage in community events whenever possible.

“We are set to attend the Nyah Christmas carnival, and if anyone has community events that they’d like us to bring the vehicle along to, they can just contact the library.”

Submissions for names for the outreach vehicle can be submitted through Swan Hill council’s Let’s Talk website, or forms can be found on the outreach vehicle.
