Lake Boga first

MEMBERS of the Lake Boga Community Garden are preparing their first entry for this year’s Show.

They will enter cut flower categories with shrubs and natives along with succulents in the novice category.

Janet Hamil said the group wanted to support the local show as well as promote their community garden in Station Street, Lake Boga.

“We have never done this before, so it’s been a learning experience,” she said.

“We had Jeannie Finlayson come out to the garden and teach us all about how to present our entries and that turned out to be more difficult than expected.

“The cuts are displayed in bottles and there are strict guidelines that must be followed such as how high the flower can extend out of the bottle.

“Jeannie has many years experiences with this, but we discovered there is a real knack to it and it takes practice.

“We were very grateful that she came out and encouraged us to enter.”

The community garden has grown over time with regular workers maintaining and planting alongside the majestic backdrop of the wheat silos and railway line.

Each Monday, a group meets for a ‘chat and cuppa’ at 10am, and Mrs Hamil said everyone was welcome to attend.

“It’s just an informal catch up but we welcome everyone to come along and enjoy the lovely gardens,” she said.

On the first Monday of each month, we also invite a guest speaker to come along and have a chat with us in the garden.

“This can be someone from a broad spectrum of areas such as health, emergency services or other local groups and supports,” she said.

Mrs Hamil will be entering her home-grown roses into this year’s show along with two other women from Lake Boga.
