Fun and food in harmony

SWAN Hill is getting ready to celebrate Harmony Day once again at Riverside Park.

A celebration of the various multicultural communities residing in the Swan Hill region, the event will be held on Saturday, March 2.

It will feature activities, entertainment and food from community members representing their culture.

Children’s craft activities, a petting zoo and outdoor games will be some of the activities available.

Harmony Day committee member Camille Cullinan said that this year, the event was earlier than usual to avoid overlapping with Ramadan, a month of fasting and reflection for Muslims which will begin on March 9.

Ms Cullinan hoped the community would be able to come together and share their own cultures.

“It helps to create an understanding between people from different cultures so that we can live in harmony,” she said.

“It’s always a really lovely event that leaves a positive feeling because we see so many people coming together and engaging with different cultures and religions.”

The day will also provide plenty of entertainment such as Afro-Brazilian drumming workshops and Matakupaat (Platypus) dance workshops, as well as performances from Indonesian dancers, a Fijian singing group and a Timorese ensemble.

Several stalls will be selling various items, including African clothing and artwork.

Food stalls will serve Afghan, Indigenous Australian, Fijian, Hong Kong, Indonesian, Malaysian, African and Korean cuisines.

“We always look forward to the food,” Ms Cullinan said.

The March 2 event will run from 4pm to 8pm.

Entry is free and there will be food and drinks for sale.

Attendees have been advised to bring their own chair or picnic blanket.
