‘Cancer cuppa’ changing lives

MEMBERS of the Inner Wheel Club in Swan Hill hosted their Biggest Morning Tea in the Grain Shed at the start of May.

What started out as a cuppa for cancer between friends and neighbours at home became something bigger 16 years later.

“We started off at home with neighbours coming along and we’d only raise about $100,” Ms Ward said.

More than 60 people attended this year’s Biggest Morning Tea at the Grain Shed and raised $1666 for Cancer Council.

Secretary of Inner Wheel Club Swan Hill Lyn Ward said she was proud to have done the event for so many years.

“Most people are happy to support us and attend the high tea to raise money when it comes to cancer,” Ms Ward said.

“There are people here who have family members in need and they have to travel out for treatment.”

Ms Ward said this year members put their aprons on and cooked up a delicious spread of scones, cream puffs and cakes for the morning tea.

“We try to do something a little different each year, like last year we watched a movie together,” she said. “We’ve also had lunches by the river.”

Inner Wheel Club’s passion for raising money for cancer research does not stop at the Biggest Morning Tea for Cancer Council.

Members’ efforts have extended to cord blood research where members were able to raise $500 in their “2 for 10” walk to help Monash University’s research to find cures for the treatment of leukaemia.

“It was only five of us who walked the two kilometres along the river but others chipped in with donations even if they couldn’t be there,” Ms Ward said.

Ms Ward said this year Inner Wheel Australia would present a combined total of more than $65,000 to the cause at its annual conference in October.
