Celebrate NAIDOC Week in full voice

NAIDOC Week in Swan Hill is having a melodic ending with Koorieoke.

The 18-plus event will be held this Friday night starting at 6.30pm at the Federal Hotel.

Tickets to the event are $10, and participants will have the chance to win prizes as well as be crowned “king” and “queen” of Koorioke.

Organisers of Koorieoke, siblings Bayden and Cree Clayton, said participants did not necessarily need to have a good voice to be crowned.

“They just need to have a go and have fun,” Ms Clayton said.

Nonetheless, the Claytons said they had been practising.

“Even if you go to sing your favourite song, you’ll realise that you’re having trouble singing the whole song,” Ms Clayton said.

The Claytons said they were glad to able to bring the event back this year.

“It’s been quite a few years since the NAIDOC committee has hosted Koorieoke – it kind of dropped off for some time,” Ms Clayton said.

“Hopefully we can keep it going each year, because everybody has responded to it so positively before.

“The committee has also been amazing this year with arranging events that are inclusive to everyone so there is something to go to for all age groups.”

Ms Clayton said he was looking forward to the community coming together and having fun at the event.

“Whether they’re Indigenous or non-Indigenous, we want the whole community to be involved and celebrate NAIDOC Week, because that’s what I think the week is about,” he said.
