Speewa Heritage Collectors Club rally sure to appeal

THE Speewa Heritage Collectors Club will be holding their annual rally of all things vintage on August 24 and 25.

Founder Cliff Hayes said the rally will include a variety of items.

“It’s not just engines and trucks, the rally will also have vintage kitchen utensils among many other things,” he said.

Mr Hayes said the rally attracts hundreds of people to Speewa every year, with 80 to 100 exhibitors booked for this year’s rally alone.

“There will be people coming from many different places, in the region but also outside the region from places like Gisbourne and Warnambool,” he said.

“Many of them camp out here at Speewa over the weekend.

“They start to come into town from around Thursday and Friday and we provide them with meals on Saturday night.

“It’s a really friendly set-up on the riverbank and they enjoy coming here year-after-year.”

Mr Hayes, 87, founded the club 15 years ago, and after years of being president and treasurer, has decided to pass the reins to other members.

“I’ve stepped back a little bit and let the younger ones take over because I am getting older,” he said.

Mr Hayes said he hopes to see younger people at the rally as well.

“These things have been collected and preserved for future generations, so they know what things were like back then,” he said.

“That’s why we’d like to see more young people.

“I’ve got my own grandkids that are interested, but we know that a lot of the younger ones will be out playing footy and doing other things.

“But it would be much appreciated if they could come on the weekend.”

The Speewa Heritage Collectors Club Annual Rally will be held at 502 Speewa Punt Road on August 24 and 25 from 9am.

Entry to the rally costs $5 but children under 14 years old can enter for free.
