WEAR a flannel shirt for a good cause as this Friday marks Flanno For A Farmer Day – an initiative by Farm Angels to raise awareness of mental health and suicide among farmers.
According to the National Rural Health Alliance, in 2023 one farmer committed suicide every 10 days, which is 94 per cent higher than the rate for non-farmers.
The campaign has been boosted with the help of Hollywood star, fourth-generation farmer and founder of travla beer, Travis Fimmel.
Along with many local businesses and organisations, staff at Murray Downs Golf and Country Club will be putting on their flannels in support of the cause.
Marketing manager at Murray Downs Golf and Country Club Shaun O’Bree said staff were proud to get behind the campaign.
“We are proudly supporting Farm Angels with travla for Flanno For A Farmer Day, because farmers are the lifeblood of the region,” Mr O’Bree said.
“Some of us working here know farmers and know how hard it can get for them so this is just a way for the community to give back.”
This Friday night, the club will have happy hour from 5pm to 6pm where $2 from every travla beer purchased will be donated to Mr Fimmel’s team and Flanno for a Farmer.
“Any travla purchase or donation that you show the bar staff during this time will enter you into the draw to win a travla esky, stubby holder and cap,” Mr O’Bree said.
Golfers will also be able to contribute and have a chance to win a Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke Max Drive worth $1080 if they wear a flannel and play either nine or 18 holes on Friday.

“If it can make farmers feel less alone and save just one more life, it makes the cause worth supporting,” Mr O’Bree said.
