Murrabit turns 100

MURRABIT locals are preparing for a busy weekend next month when they celebrate the town’s centenary.

Murrabit and District Heritage Group president Neil Hopkins said the group has archived many historical items over the years which they are now curating for their upcoming events.

“We’ve got an absolute mountain of material which consists of old photos and documents,” Mr Hopkins said.

“There’s just boxes and boxes of items we’re currently sorting out.

“A lot of the locals and returning locals will be able to see their grandparents or great-grandparents displayed in some of these photos.

“Some of these photos go back to the end of the 19th century, so we’ve got photos that are about 130 years old.

“We’re hoping there will be a big turnout among past and present residents, but I’ve also gotten calls of interest from out of town and even interstate from people who are just interested in our history.”

The events will be held over two days on Saturday, October 5, and Sunday, October 6.

The renowned Murrabit Market will be held on Saturday as usual, but will also feature photographic displays of the town’s early history.

On Sunday, visitors and locals can walk around town on a self-guided tour of historic Murrabit buildings.

“The school, the football club rooms, the golf club, the old scout hall, all of those buildings are key points of the walking tour,” Mr Hopkins said.

Displays and information about early settlers and the station established on the old Kerang Stony Crossing Railway will also be available at the Murrabit Hall.

“There will also be a lunch at the hall where we will have speeches and cut cake to celebrate 100 years,” Mr Hopkins said.

“We also plan to celebrate and recognise the oldest resident in attendance.”

Mr Hopkins added that they will also unveil a new plaque commemorating the centenary as well as a tree planting on Sunday.

“The tree will be planted at the old Murrabit Station,” he said. “The establishment of the station is the reason Murrabit became a township.

“We’re hoping lots of people, both old and young, can be present for the tree planting.”
