Nyah recognises leaders

Byron Lenon – Junior Nyah Citizen Award.

Byron Lenon was recognised for his proactive participation in his school community with the Junior Nyah Citizen Award.

Byron completed his primary school education with Nyah District Primary School in 2024.

He is a much-admired member of the school and community, a very caring student and always helped others.

Byron often did a scope of the yard after school hours to retrieve balls, uniforms or sporting equipment which was left out and returned it to the administration area.

He volunteered his services to set up and pack up breakfast club each Tuesday and Thursday throughout the years, and could often been seen in the yard helping maintenance with any jobs that needed doing in the yard or garden.

In the classroom he was a kind and considerate student, always offering to help his teachers or classmates when they needed it.

He is a well deserving recipient of this award and Nyah District Primary School staff, students and community are very proud of him.

David ‘Snail’ Henson – Nyah District Citizenship Award

David ‘Snail’ Henson was recognised for his local sporting contributions spanning decades.

Mr Henson was born and bred in Nyah and has been heavily involved in all manner of sport in this district since he was a child.

As an adult he played cricket for the Nyah District Cricket Club before joining the Border Cricket Club, where the team won the 1988 grand final.

He played for the Nyah West Tennis Club for nearly 20 years and in that time was involved in many finals and premierships.

He played all his junior and senior football with Nyah and later Nyah/Nyah West United, playing his 300th game in 2000.

Since retiring from playing football, he has been heavily involved in the club, coaching juniors for five years.

He continues to concentrate on coaching the youth sides, and has been the footy club Auskick coordinator for more than 20 years.

In 2017 he was awarded the Central Murray Football League Auskick Coach of the Year and went on to win the AFL Auskick Coach the same year.

He continues to volunteer his time at the club and has been on the committee for numerous years, particularly involved in recruiting future champions.
