The show must go on

THE Swan Hill Show has been a popular fixture on the region’s social calendar for more than 130 years.

Coordinated by the Swan Hill District Agricultural & Pastoral Society Inc, this year the people behind the committee need the community’s help to ensure the show goes on.

Committee president Reg Packer has held his position for 12 years and said it was time for a change.

“I have found the role extremely rewarding but think the committee would benefit from a new set of ideas and a fresh outlook towards the future,” he said.

“The show is an integral part of our town and in fact, holding a show is what cements Swan Hill as a proper regional town.

“I feel it’s time for me to move on and hand the reins to the next generation.”

The committee met in December to vote on key positions and was unsuccessful in receiving nominations for the roles of president, vice president, secretary and treasurer.

Mr Packer said the role would suit a retiree or someone who could spare an hour or two a week.

“The show society is a nice group of people to work with and on a personal note I have found it rewarding,” he said.

“Since the first show in 1895, there has only ever been one year it did not run and that was during Covid-19.

“Since then, we have seen approximately 6000 people attend across the two days of the show, each year.

“This demonstrates the show is still a viable and a popular attraction.

“It’s a great source of entertainment, education and a chance for community to showcase their talents across hundreds of different areas, including agriculture, arts and crafts, cooking and horticulture.”

Mr Packer said the treasurer role would suit someone with a finance background and welcomed any nominations.

The committee meets once a month on the third Thursday of each month and time commitments don’t really ramp up until August, two months before the show.

“It’s a great opportunity to meet likeminded people while doing a great service for the community,” Mr Packer said.

“As president, my role is to oversee things, and I work closely with the secretary.

“I will communicate with council, government departments and sponsors as well as make decisions on policy and operation matters in conjunction with the committee.

“The society is financially sound and around 100 people come on board to assist with the running of the show.

“It has provided me with a lot of community connection and friendships.”

One of Mr Packer’s highlights in his time as president was securing sponsorship from local businesses to firm up financial security.

Although he feels it is time for him to step away, he is happy to offer a year of support to ensure a smooth transition to the new president.

“I’m certainly not packing up and walking away completely,” he said.

“I want to see the show thrive into the future and I am happy to chat with anyone who is considering the role to let them know more details about what is involved.

“I will be around to assist with the show and provide support as needed.”

After postponing the vote for new executive committee members in December, the committee will meet on February 20 with the hopes of electing new members.
