Centenaries amp up Nyah District reunion

NYAH District is celebrating a series of centenaries over the Anzac Day weekend with three days of community events.

As the fire brigade, Memorial Hall and Grand Hotel turn 100, the Nyah District Heritage Committee is putting together a reunion weekend to celebrate the history of the two towns.

Committee member Vicki Allen said it would be a weekend of reconnecting with the history of Nyah District and celebrating the present-day community.

“We hope the weekend will bring old locals back to reunite with the people they grew up with and people from around the region will come out and have a good time,” she said.

A full schedule of social events includes a community breakfast and the football club’s home game on Friday, a market in the Nyah West Park and a dance and family night at the Memorial Hall on Saturday, and a church service on the riverbank and lunch at the reserve on Sunday.

Drowning Sorrows will headline the Saturday night dance and Scoogs are performing at the Sunday lunch.

The fire brigade will have three vintage trucks and old uniforms on display to commemorate their 100 years of service to the community, and the Swan Hill Genealogical and Historical Society will showcase a display at the Tyntynder Homestead.

The gathered information will show how Nyah and Nyah West formed among the changing Mallee landscape and the people who called it home.

“Nyah developed from an outpost for Tyntynder where paddle-steamers would pull in and restock on fuel for their engines to gradually become a township with river pumps to send irrigation to Mallee farms.

“When the railway came through to Piangil, Nyah West was formed and became the important port for farmers to ship their crops off to larger ports.

“There’s quite a lot of history of the residents from that time that can be found at the cemetery, which we will talk about on the cemetery tour in Nyah West.

“The bus tour on Saturday will visit some of the significant sites between Nyah and Tooleybuc.”

The community can still get involved in pulling the April 25-27 long weekend together.

The committee is looking for sports memorabilia, including photos, uniforms, trophies and stories.

Stallholders are invited to register for the Saturday market.

The Nyah West and District Heritage Weekend 2025 Facebook page will share more information as it becomes available, including bookings for the tours.
