Home is where the hub is

A HOLISTIC place-based organisation with roots in Robinvale has introduced a free walking group to its program roster to encourage residents to move in a fun and social setting.

Our Place was designed to support the education, health and development of all children and families in communities experiencing disadvantage by utilising the universal platform of a school.

“Our vision is that all children and their families succeed in life, and we aim to reshape the service system by influencing changes in policies and practices that address the structural causes of disadvantage,” a spokesperson for Our Place said.

“We work together with the Robinvale College and multiple support services to act as ‘the glue’ in enabling positive outcomes for everyone in the Robinvale/Euston communities.”

Executive director June McLoughlin AM said part of the organisation’s practice was to facilitate partnerships that enabled the school to be the central place for learning and support services to lift barriers to educational achievement.

“There has been a long-standing community development approach in Robinvale that is quite impressive, and a strong commitment by the community, for the community,” she said.

The Learning and Community Hub site is focused on ensuring children and young people are engaging as learnings, that families receive the health and wellbeing services they need and are provided with strong community connections.

“If we give these kids the opportunity to be proud of the town, and they go get an education, come back and give back to the town, it’s a different sort of fulfilment feeling,” a community facilitator at the Robinvale site said.

“Hopefully they have pride in their town, and are passionate about the work they do and where they do it.”

Rotating activities throughout the school term include being part of the Community Garden, community cooking and sewing classes, as well as every day help and support.
