In the saddle for Berriwillock rodeo

THE Berriwillock community is gearing up for the return of their much-anticipated rodeo.

Following a hiatus, that spanned more than three decades, the event is set to make its grand return this Saturday, in an action-packed afternoon of entertainment.

In 18 short months, the committee has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to bring the event to fruition.

Organiser Jeremy Watson said the aim was to unite people and invigorate the Mallee by hosting a large-scale event.

“Our motto is making memories and that’s what we hope to achieve,” he said.

“We want to get the town moving again and bring the whole community together.”

Mr Watson said the demise of the Mallee Rally had left a big hole within the region, impacting the local economy as well as fundraising opportunities for local groups and clubs.

In a bid to turn that around, the rodeo is utilising local volunteers to help provide the manpower needed to run the event.

Local groups, including the Lions, football/netball clubs and schools are set to roll up their sleeves and play an important role in helping execute the night.

Mr Watson said ticket sales were progressing well, with the VIP tent at full capacity.

“There’s still plenty of room for general admission and tickets will be available at the gate,” Mr Watson said, noting the event had attracted both interstate and local interest.

He said there was a buzz around the town and a sense of pride as everything came together.

The rodeo has attracted more than 100 entrants in an action-packed schedule of events, including the open bull ride, open bareback, open saddle bronc and women’s barrel race.

Australian artist James Blundell will perform as part of the entertainment line-up.

“We’re hoping for a big show, and will have food trucks, children’s entertainment, live music and onsite camping,” Mr Watson said.

Spectators are encouraged to bring their own seating.

The event kicks off at 4pm on Saturday.
