All invited to brighten up town

A SMALL murals community art project for the Woorinen district has been launched and is well underway.

The project is an initiative of the Mallee Artists of Swan Hill Inc and Woorinen District Progress Association that will see five murals painted by the community and placed around the township of Woorinen South.

The project has been funded through the community flood recovery and resilience grants, made possible by Swan Hill Rural City Council in conjunction with the Federal and State governments.

MASH secretary Lorri Lambert said community consultation was conducted by the two groups, and ideas for the designs were passed on to lead artist Gail Groat, local teacher and resident of Woorinen South.

“Stuart Mitchell, well-known Woorinen South resident, has volunteered his time to repair and prepare the aluminium panels that will become the murals,” she said.

“One of the objectives of the grant is to use local people and products where possible, and all paints have been purchased locally, with the business donating some of the paint and supplies for the project.”

Ms Lambert said students from Woorinen District Primary School would be painting one mural, with a multicultural theme, and other community members will assist in the painting of the remaining murals.

She said themes include the horticultural and agricultural industry, native flora and fauna, soldier settlers and local community groups such as the fire brigade.

“At the conclusion of this project, the murals will be installed around the township of Woorinen South, and a brochure will be created to encourage locals and visitors to take a walk around the township,” Ms Lambert said.

Community members are invited to help paint the murals Saturday and on Sunday.

Join in the fun and share refreshments and lunch with other community members.

“The panels will be ready to go, with the lead artist and members of the Mallee Artists on hand to help and advise with the painting,” Ms Lambert said.

“Any member of the Woorinen district community over 15 years of age is welcome to come along and paint.

“There will be painting activities for younger children to enjoy.

“The project hopes to strengthen collective identity and serve as a reminder of the community’s shared history, values, and goals, build skills and create something beautiful for the community to share.”
