Food for thought as town supports needy

OVER the past year, the Swan Hill community has stepped up in remarkable ways to support St Vincent de Paul, A Good Kitchen and the Swan Hill Food Hub.

From fresh produce to pantry staples, the generosity of individuals, schools, businesses, and service groups has helped residents experiencing financial insecurity.

In the most recent act of generosity, St Mary’s Primary School and St Mary MacKillop College collected non-perishable food items and household essentials just in time for winter.

Meanwhile, Tooleybuc Central School, Swan Hill Christian School, and Woorinen South Kindergarten also pitched in with food donations and fundraising efforts.

Local businesses have made consistent contributions.

Woolworths, Swan Hill Fresh Produce, Swan Hill Wholesalers, Rivetts Bakery, and Logan Street Café have regularly donated everything from bread and fruit to hot chips and chocolate.

Meanwhile, Centrelink, NorthVic Electricity, Murray Downs Bowls Club, Darts Association, and ComfyZone Massage contributed financial support.

A Good Kitchen also received unexpected support from the Swan Hill Fire Brigade Auxiliary, who donated leftover firefighter ration packs at the end of fire season.

At Christmas, the Food Hub distributed more than 100 festive food packs, thanks to community donations and an anonymous benefactor.

Other highlights included hygiene product drives, support during Anti-Poverty Week, and regular collection boxes at Woolworths Swan Hill.

Donations to the Swan Hill Food Hub can be made year-round at Community Health, Neighbourhood House, Woolworths and The Dandy Lion Studio.

Volunteers are always welcome.
