Women’s cricket’s champion

A LIFE-LONG innings of cricket — both men’s and women’s — has led to Kristy
Cameron excelling in women’s cricket and now promoting the game in Swan Hill.
She spoke to ROBERT HENSON about her love for the game.

KRISTY grew up all over country Victoria, following her bank manager father from job to job in places such as Bairnsdale, Maffra, Euroa and Bendigo.

As soon as she was old enough she took to cricket, with her father also a umpire, coach and general cricket enthusiast.

In grade six at a Euroa primary school Kristy got her first taste of the stereotypes surrounding women and sports.

“At school I put my name down for cricket, and they told me I couldn’t because I was a girl. Things were a lot different back then,” she said.

“So I went home in tears to dad and asked “Can I play cricket dad?” And he said “We’ll see” and next thing, I was on the team.”

The promising young cricketer’s career continued, going on to captain an under 16 boys team and assist in the formation of girls cricket league after moving to Bendigo.

“I played indoor cricket in Bendigo, and a lot of the outdoor (cricket) girls all got together.

“We had a big registration day and we got enough for four sides.”
