Woorinen too strong for Lakers

AFTER finishing with a first innings lead of almost 150 runs, Woorinen looked to bat Lakers out of the game when play resumed at the Tigers’ home ground.

Tyler Beasy and Dean Morpeth began attacking scoring from the first over.

Beasy did most of the damage as he smashed his way to 50 including two sixes and three fours in the new day’s play.

Morpeth advanced his score past the 150 mark and when a fantastic run out with a direct hit from the boundary by Alan Hatcher brought about his downfall, Woorinen declared at 5/289, with Morpeth on 163 and Beasy not out on 59.

Lakers attempted to save an outright defeat by batting time and started on the right track as opening duo Hatcher and Ryan Callaghan withstood the Woorinen onslaught for 15 overs until Callaghan played all around a Glenn Violi delivery to be bowled for seven.

Matt Smith and Hatcher (44) once again formed a strong partnership spanning 17 overs before Brendan Crabbe found a feint edge off Hatchers’ bat bringing about his down fall.

Wickets then began to fall at steady pace including Rob Hatcher (5), Brendan Shepherd (0) and Smith (36) shortly after the tea break.

Tyson Taverna saw his partners fall at rapid pace at the hands of Violi and was last out with his team falling 20 overs short.

Violi claimed four wickets and Woorinen snared an outright win.
