Sea Lake turns shortage to success

PERHAPS one of the most unique stories of the 2012/13 cricket season is the Sea
Lake Woomelang B grade side.

Despite having 28 players on their list
throughout the season, they made it to finals, and on Saturday won the
premiership against Woorinen.

Speaking to The Guardian on Monday at a Swan
Hill pub before a round of golf, the Sea Lake players revealed their eventual
grand final score; Sea Lake batted out their full 40 overs to make 7/181, then
bowled Woorinen out for 122.

It was a long way to come for the side that took
five matches to reach even a draw, and was second last on the ladder halfway
through the season.

Faced with a lack of players, some of the under 14
players stepped it up with the men.

The youngest player in Saturday’s side
was only 18, but many younger Sea Lake players that contributed throughout the
year were cheering from the sidelines.

Sea Lake’s top scorers were Steven
Lyon with 35, Zac Noonan with 32 and Rick Heathcote with 27. Best in bowling
were Troy Tiburcy (3/20) Jake Buddee (2/30) and Rick Heathcote (2/30).

As man
of the match, Heathcote said Sea Lake’s win was “awesome, absolutely
unreal”.
