SHDCA ROUND 4 & 5MATCH REPORTS

ROUND 4

ULTIMA-TUF 10-136 lost to ST.MARY’S-TYNTYNDER 6-137

St.Mary’s-Tyntynder’s undefeated start to season 2021-22 continued on Saturday afternoon, with a four wicket win over Ultima-TUF.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, the Roodogs would have been well pleased with their start, navigating their way to 35 before losing their first wicket.

Ben Shepherd was the standout for Ultima-TUF, scoring 72 runs off just 66 balls and single handedly threatening to hand the Saints a difficult run chase.

The introduction of co-captain Jack Shannahan into the attack proved to be the match winning move, as he dismissed Ben Shepherd, the dangerous Kade Benfield (0) and Ayden Symons (22) in a matter of overs, with the Roodogs losing three wickets for just two runs.

The collapse didn’t end there, as the home side struggled to put together another meaningful partnership, eventually being dismissed for 136 in the last over of their innings.

While Shannahan (3 for 10 off 7 overs) started the implosion, his performance was overshadowed by youngster Koben Ryan, who in just his second A Grade game, cleaned up the tail with 4 for 18 off 6.3 overs.

A 61-run opening partnership between Riley Daniels (62) and Bailey Codling (18) was the perfect response for the Saints, as they set about chasing down the Roodogs total.

Jared Halligan contributed 33 from 41 balls in the middle order to see St.Mary’s home, despite a late flurry of wickets. For the Roodogs, Ben Shepherd and Jordan King were the pick of the bowlers with two wickets each.

RSL 9-109 lost to WOORINEN 2-110

Woorinen showed they will be one of the teams to beat in the run up to finals, with a dominant display over the previously top of the ladder RSL at the weekend – keeping their Kookaburra Cup Final hopes alive in the process.

The Tigers couldn’t have asked for a better start, dismissing Ryan Hinton in the first over of the day to have the Blues reeling early.

From that point on, Woorinen kept their foot on the throat of RSL, with the Blues unable to produce a partnership of any sizeable note to resurrect their innings.

Cameron Cook (24 not out) and Stuart McGregor (19) put on 38-runs for the ninth wicket to give the RSL bowlers something to defend, as the Blues scrambled their way 109 at the end of their forty overs.

While the wickets were shared around, Stefan Mangiameli was the pick of the Woorinen bowlers, with figures of 2 for 13 from his eight overs.

The Tigers made light work of the run chase, with Cooper Fox smashing an unbeaten 53 off just 55 balls, which included six boundaries and a six.

Fox, together with Marcus Mangiameli (9), Mitch Uhlhorn (18) and Darren Rushton (23 not out) plundered the normally miserly RSL bowling line-up to all parts of the ground, reaching their target in just 23 overs for the loss of two wickets and a very comfortable victory.

NYAH DISTRICT 10-100 defeated SWAN HILL 10-93

Despite going into the game warm favorites during the week, an extremely undermanned Nyah District pulled off one of the wins of the season, defending just 100 runs on a good batting deck at the Showgrounds against Swan Hill.

The Demons were without half of their regular A Grade side and had two debutants in Harry Shadbolt and Ethan Curran, but still managed to get the job done over the inexperienced Swans.

Swan Hill started the game well with the ball, with skipper Cal Noonan removing his opposite number in Ben Shadbolt without scoring. Shadbolt’s dismissal set the tone for Nyah District, as the visitors lost consistent wickets throughout the innings, with Justin Toomey (15), Ben Sheridan (19) and Rohan Shadbolt (18) the only batsman to make double figures.

Alan Hatcher wound the clock back with three wickets for the home side, while Cal Noonan and Lachie Edwards both claimed two each – however, the Swans were at times still wayward with the ball, sending down 19 wide’s, which would prove costly in the final wash up.

With the score at 3 for 63 and set batsmen Andrew Clark and Lachie Edwards at the crease, the Swans appeared to be coasting to victory.

That was until Sheridan found a way through the defence of Clark, with the Swans innings disintegrating from that moment onwards.

In what is becoming a regular theme for Swan Hill, they went on to lose five wickets for just six runs, as Lachie Edwards could only watch on, stranded at the non-striker’s end as the carnage went on around him.

A 21-run ninth wicket partnership between Edwards and his father Matt looked like saving the Swans, until Sheridan struck again, bowling Matt out for nine and handing him his fourth wicket of the innings.

Moments later, Shadbolt picked up his fifth wicket to leave the home side an agonizing seven runs short, with Lachie Edwards stranded on 15 not out and on the wrong side of the dramatic finish.

ROUND 5

SWAN HILL 10-36 lost to ST.MARY’S-TYNTYNDER 2-40

Swan Hill’s horror season continued on Sunday afternoon – being outplayed in every facet of the game by an uncompromising St.Mary’s-Tyntynder.

The Saints sent the Swans in and immediately set about tearing through the visitors batting order.

Alan Hatcher had a weekend to forget with the bat, being dismissed for his second golden duck in two days.

He was quickly followed by Cal Noonan, as Swan Hill found themselves in trouble at 2 for 2 in the opening overs.

Jacob Hatcher (6) and Lachie Edwards (14) then put on a 22-run partnership for the third wicket, but when Austin McKerrow found the edge of Hatcher’s bat, it also signaled the end of the Swan’s resistance.

Off-spinner Dom Violi rattled through the middle and lower order, taking five wickets for just eight runs, as St.Mary’s-Tyntynder took just 23 overs to dismiss Swan Hill for just 36 runs.

The pain didn’t end there for the visitors, as the undefeated Saints took just 5.2 overs to surpass the meagre total – and go to the top of the A Grade ladder in the process.

RSL 10-121 lost to WANDELLA 6-122

RSL entered this weekend a game clear on top of the A Grade ladder – but will end it back in the pack after following up their loss to Woorinen with another disappointing result at the hands of Wandella.

Missing two important members of their top order in Ryan Hinton and Ben Hallam, Ryan Barnes had the Blues immediately on the back foot, claiming the wickets of Stuart Patterson, Michael Harrower and Oscar Hier before the score had passed 20.

Ammar Khalid (23) and Pat Caldwell (41) put a brief stop to the capitulation, putting together a 38-run sixth wicket partnership, before Khalid departed with the score on 74.

Caldwell and Cameron Cook (12) then continued the scoring until Caldwell was dismissed. It was all downhill from there, as the Bombers claimed the last three wickets for just two runs, to bowl RSL out for 121, with Ryan Barnes ending the innings the way he started, finishing with five wickets for the afternoon.

Much like the Blues, Wandella also found themselves on the back foot early, losing both openers cheaply, before Greg Dickson entered the game and steered his team home with a match winning captains knock of 58 not out, with the Bombers passing the required total with ten overs still to spare.

ULTIMA-TUF 9-144 lost to WOORINEN 4-148

Woorinen made it two wins from two games for the weekend when they chased down Ultima-TUF’s competitive 144 at home on Sunday afternoon.

The Roodogs top and middle order all got starts, with Josh Waldron, Will Nelson, Mitch Seton-Stewart and Kade Benfield all making their way into the twenties – but none of them going on with it and putting the big score that their team needed on the board.

Woorinen on the other hand had no such issues, with both Marcus Mangiameli and Mitch Uhlhorn going on to score half centuries in the Tigers successful run chase.

With the ball, Guri Singh took three wickets, as did Uhlhorn, who continued his breakout season with another fine performance to show that he’ll be a player of the future for Woorinen.

The Tigers made light work of the run chase on their home deck, running down the Roodogs score in the 25th over for the loss of just four wickets.

The percentage boosting win not only sees the Tigers move inside the top four – but also gives them a strong chance of qualifying for the Kookaburra Cup Final – provided they get the six points next Saturday against Wandella.
