Murray Downs Diamonds in with a shot to topple ladder leaders Wimmera Roos

THE Murray Downs Diamonds will be hoping to make a statement this weekend when they clash against the top-of-the-table Wimmera Roos in Round 9 of the Wimmera Girls Cricket League.

Currently sitting second, a win against the Roos could propel the Diamonds to the top of the ladder and the girls will be keen to make up for their Round 4 loss to the side.

That has been their only loss of the competition so far, as the Diamonds have been one of the two standout teams in the inaugural competition.

Last round they had a comfortable win against the Stawall Strikers on the back of some great batting from Amalie Bell (10), Heidi Schneider (21) and Issy Boulton (22).

With the ball, Boulton took 2/12 as Marli Doyle (1/4) and Mia Hansen (1/5) also chipped in with some attacking bowling.

All three matches are set to be played in Swan Hill for the first time since Round 3, as the Diamonds hope to make the most of their home ground advantage.

The top of the table clash will be played at Swan Hill Recreation Reserve this Sunday, commencing at 9:30am.

The third-placed Strikers will go up against the fourth-placed Horsham Hurricanes at Gurnett Oval as the Strikers look to bounce back after their loss to the Diamonds.

The Hurricanes had their second win of the competition last round after defeating the Horsham Sixers in the battle of the two Horsham sides.

The final match of the round is between the Wimmera Mallee Belles and the Sixers at Alan Garden Reserve as the Sixers look to get their first win of the year.

The Sixers have been competitive over the last couple of rounds, and Sunday could be their best chance yet to get that elusive first win.

The round is set to be a close one, as all games are all equally matched which should result in some fantastic cricket.

Also this Sunday is the second clinic of the Woolworths Cricket Blast which is targeted at girls interested in cricket, between the ages of five and 10.

Girls are invited to come down and and give cricket a try and there will also be a lunch provided, the clinic is being run in conjunction with Cricket Victoria.

Held at the Swan Hill Showgrounds this Sunday from 9am, the clinic will also be held on Sundays March 6 and 13.

To register, search Swan Hill District Cricket Association on Playcricket.com.au or contact Alana Bookham for more information on 0476 196 931.
