Teams look to shake off losses

RSL and Wandella will be looking to make amends on Saturday in their Swan Hill District Cricket Association round 16 clash, both coming off big losses last weekend.

Oscar Hier had an unstoppable bowling performance for the Blues, taking 7/61 at a tidy economy, but that wasn’t enough to get past Nyah District.

The Bombers, on four one-day wins this season, suffered a 129-run loss to big-hitting Woorinen.

Wandella skipper Ryan Barnes said his side were well aware that the three-win Blues would be looking to bounce back quickly.

“We know they’re a quality outfit; they’ve got a couple of real high-quality batsmen and bowlers,” he said.

“Ryan Hinton, he’s a very good bat. He always makes a good score.

“They’ve got likes of Stuart Patterson, another talented batsman that’s been playing for a long time and has a lot of knowledge of the game.

“There’s also the Caldwell brothers that bowl quite well too.”

The Tigers batsmen last week punished Wandella’s bowlers, posting a mammoth total of 255, including 94 runs from Darren Rushton.

Barnes said his side needed to improve their fielding.

“I think Darren Ruston thought he was still playing a T20 last game,” he said.

“He gave us a couple of chances early on, and we just didn’t hang onto them.

“He definitely made us pay for it, and it’s something we know we will be focusing on in training.

“There is still some stuff that we need to work on in our top order.

“In the T20s we use a different white ball to 40-over cricket, and then we go to a red ball.

“It’s a completely different ball game, so to speak.”

While Wandella may be without four of their starting XI, including No.1 bowler Peter Moore, Barnes said his side were raring to go.

“We might have three or four outs this weekend,” he said.

“I’ve picked up a little side-strain so I might not get a bowl either.

“We’re definitely up for the challenge, and it might provide a chance for a young, up-and-coming bowler to get an opportunity.”

Elsewhere, Ultima TUF will look to propel themselves from the bottom of the ladder when they take on Barham Koondrook at Alan Garden Reserve.

There will be no rest for the Kookaburra Cup finalists when Nyah District travel to Murrabit, and St Mary’s go up against an in-form Woorinen on their home deck.

Swan Hill have the weekend off with the bye.
